The Ramadan Relief Package, which was announced by the Pakistani government to provide relief to the poor during the holy month of Ramadan, has faced numerous challenges in its implementation. One of the major issues faced was the distribution of atta, a staple food item, to the poor.
In Islamabad, the distribution of atta to the poor started off on a messy note. Poor women and others were disrespected when they went to the utility store to collect their ration. Some individuals did not receive a special code on their mobile number, while others were rejected due to double addresses on their ID cards. These problems highlighted the lack of attention and planning on the part of the government.
Before Ramadan, the government had promised to provide free atta to over 185,000 poor households in Islamabad, but this promise was not fulfilled due to the government's disinterest and negligence. The Prime Minister had announced that every poor household would receive three packs of 10kg atta, but the government's machinery failed to deliver on this promise.
The head of the atta distribution program claimed that only those who were eligible received the atta. He also stated that they charged only one rupee from every person, but some people claimed that they were asked to pay ten rupees. These discrepancies have caused mistrust and frustration among the poor, who are already struggling to make ends meet.
According to the Benazir Income Support Program, during Ramadan, 557,682 packets of atta will be distributed to registered households in Islamabad. This program aims to provide support to the poorest of the poor during the holy month.
The challenges faced in the distribution of atta
highlight the need for better planning and implementation of relief programs
for the poor. The government needs to pay more attention to the needs of the
marginalized sections of society and ensure that relief programs are
implemented smoothly and efficiently. Only then can the government fulfill its
duty to provide for its citizens, especially during times of crisis.
